Henrique Almeida de Castro is a Ph.D. candidate in Law and Political Economy at the University of São Paulo, with financial support from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and a researcher at the Law and Policy Group and at the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP). In 2020-21, he was a Democracy Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. Broadly stated, he is interested in understanding the causal interplay between the State’s legal structure and the actions of organized interests. Concrete topics have included participatory democracy and institutional change during democratic transitions. His dissertation compares the historical trajectories of tripartite dialogue fora on economic policy in Brazil and South Africa, seeking to explain why these institutions have been stable in the latter case and unstable in the former.
