Natasha Lindstaedt

University of Essex

Natasha is a Professor of Government at the University of Essex, specializing in authoritarian politics, democratic backsliding, state building, and human security. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. in Comparative Politics and International Relations from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before joining the faculty at Essex, she instructed political science and international relations courses at the University of Amsterdam, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and California State University, Long Beach.

Her empirical research examines how non-democratic states maintain power, the role of violent non-state actors, and the institutional erosion that facilitates democratic decline. Rather than evaluating governance through purely domestic frameworks, her scholarship connects institutional decay to broader regional contexts, specifically tracking political developments across the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Her extensive bibliography includes textbooks and core studies such as Dictators and Dictatorships (2011), Democracies and Authoritarian Regimes (2019), and Democratic Decay and Authoritarian Resurgence (2021).

Beyond her university research and role as Director of Education at Essex, Lindstaedt translates her academic expertise into global policy and media analysis. She has served as an institutional consultant for the European Union External Action Service, International IDEA, and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA). She also contributes regularly as a broadcast commentator on international conflicts and elections for networks including the BBC, CNN, France 24, and Al Jazeera.
