PAL began with an effort to study the mechanics of autocratic legalism in Brazil, India, and South Africa and how these can be compared to Hungary (a case that Scheppele treats as “archetypal” of that phenomenon) and the United States (a country long deemed “exceptional”, the beacon of the “rule of law” and almost immune to autocracy).

This stage, called PAL BISA +, has led to multiple outputs.

An interview symposium on India, coordinated by Deepa Das Acevedo, was published in the Jindal Global Law Review in 2022.

Separate country studies for BISA + were published as a special issue in the VRÜ/World Comparative Law journal in 2022.

In 2023, a book on Brazil will be published in Portuguese and English, edited by Oscar Vieira, Raquel Pimenta, Fabio de Sa e Silva, and Marta Machado.
